Young Lady Looking to the Rafters

 

Reaching for the sunshine

spilling from the haymow

hemp

roped thick and twisted

beckoned bare-legged innocence

to shimmy silken plait.

 

Swing mid-ascent,

raw thighs chafed

the startled cry,

lacquer lost

in a splintered slide.
